Welcome to giftsciencearchive.net, an experimental archive of the work of Dutch-American artist Sands Murray-Wassink began during the artist’s 2019-21 commission with performance art organization If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution. More The archive is assembled through storytelling and reproductive labour methods developed in collaboration with Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger and Radna Rumping. Expanding the boundaries of performance documentation, the database also documents the eponymous nearly three-year durational performance of archiving an art/life practice—itself an expanding of the boundaries of performance. Giftsciencearchive.net echoes this commitment, giving visitors multiple ways to relate in and to the artist’s archive. To learn more about Murray-Wassink’s practice and about the ‘Gift Science Archive’ archiving performance, see curator Megan Hoetger’s essay ‘Honouring Sands’s Horsepower’ in the About section above.

Photographs in collaboration with Johanna Braun. Location: Johanna Braun’s apartment, Vienna, Austria, first district. Photographer: Unknown.
From 27. April (WeTransfer notes): “The other 11 images are from 2009 as well. They were taken in Vienna and are a performance with artist Johanna Braun where I am both art historian and nude, and Johanna and I perform together discussing her work. This was based on a 1969 work by Carolee Schneemann in London called ‘Naked Action Lecture’ where she was art historian of her own work in a slide show and got naked at a certain point to see if she could keep her authority.” – SMW.

Photographer: Robin Wassink-Murray
“This was a centrepiece of the ‘In Good Company (Horsepower)’ exhibition at mistral. In fact, it was the origin point of the exhibition’s title. The photo is a digitized slide, and it was originally taken in 2000 by Robin when he and Sands met Carolee in Denmark for the opening of an exhibition on the body in art. They are standing in the gallery on Feminist art where Carolee’s work was featured. Behind them are works by Ana Mendieta, Hannah Wilke and Orlan. Sands always says he would have liked to have had a photo of Carolee and Hannah together (they were friends), but Carolee never managed to find one for him. This was the first time that Carolee and Robin had met, so the photo is a commemoration of many things.” – MH.
