Ana Mendieta

A good friend of Carolee Schneemann, Howardena Pindell, Mary Beth Edelson, etc. etc. Seminal artist who extended Frida Kahlo and built her own roads. Murdered by Carl Andre. Robin and I own Carolee’s work homage to her and her death ‘Hand/Heart for Ana Mendieta’ 1986 (we have one triptych strip of the series). A major influence although you might not see it on the surface, connection to the earth and serious spirituality. – SMW.

“This was a centrepiece of the ‘In Good Company (Horsepower)’ exhibition at mistral. In fact, it was the origin point of the exhibition’s title. The photo is a digitized slide, and it was originally taken in 2000 by Robin when he and Sands met Carolee in Denmark for the opening of an exhibition on the body in art. They are standing in the gallery on Feminist art where Carolee’s work was featured. Behind them are works by Ana Mendieta, Hannah Wilke and Orlan. Sands always says he would have liked to have had a photo of Carolee and Hannah together (they were friends), but Carolee never managed to find one for him. This was the first time that Carolee and Robin had met, so the photo is a commemoration of many things.” – MH.

20 January 2021 (via email): “so i was 19 and in brooklyn at pratt institute, pre-carolee i think, that was ’94, there is a spoon and fork, and a knife on the pillow near me. this version i traded with an artist in vienna (named katrina daschner), it’s hand printed by me, framed nicely. but i made a good negative of it so i can reprint it any size now. i love it and it reminds me of valie export and others, ana mendieta… so many… i just thought of it tonight when robin got home.” – SMW.

“The bastard husband of Ana Mendieta. Writing my name over patriarchy. You're just flesh and bone like us. Mortal like us. More or less.” – SMW. “Covered in corn oil that never truly dries. Why people thought he was such an important artist. Oh, that asshole again.” – SMW.
