“I call myself a “performalist”. after Hannah Wilke and her ‘Performalist Self Portraits’. She was such a genius.” (Letter SMW to Aimar Arriola on 1 January 2021)
More
No matter which side of the camera, an image of one’s body is one’s own image. Regardless the photographer, that image is a self-portrait. Here is the crux of the performalist self-portrait: to claim both the subject and the object positions in image-making.
The performalist self-portrait, then, is not narcissism per se – a claim made against both Wilke’s and Sands’ practices and a claim which both found ways to reclaim. Maybe it’s radical narcissism. In any case, the performalist self-portrait is surely radical. It’s a radical demand for a both/and position in the world. Where the either/or’s would try to delimit us and categorize us, the both/and’s ask us to think dialectically. For Sands and, I think, for Wilke the both/and’s ask us to feel dialectically. Both/and. That’s the title of artist Lorraine O’Grady’s 2021 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, which Sands loved from afar, immersing himself in O’Grady’s writings and interviews over the course of that spring. Sands’ practice is intuitively and insistently citational, hence the prominence of Wilke’s invented typology in Sands’ world; hence the appearance here of Lorraine O’Grady; hence the ever-present links back to the Gift Science Archive guiding lights -- Wilke, Carolee Schneemann and Adrian Piper – at the bottom of each page of this website. Feminist praxis is intuitively and insistently citational because feminist praxis is built upon the shared belief that sharing and supporting (re: reproductive labor in all of its seen and unseen manifestations) are the basis of life, of a livable life, of making life livable, of understanding what livability looks like and feels like. It takes a village, as the saying goes. – MH.

“Hannah Wilke. One thing I learnt from her was to be my own art historian and cheering section. Self-narcissism when no one is looking at you.” – SMW.

From 12. April 2020 (WeTransfer notes): “they are a bit too close for me to properly ‘judge’, they are a bit neutral for me. Carolee always told me to go to where the difficulty was, and somehow my face has always been a challenging situation.” – SMW. 30. April 2020 (inventory note): “I also think of Jo Spence, the British artist, being told she was ‘brave’ for using her own image when she was not classically beautiful. And Carolee Schneemann and Hannah Wilke subverting the ‘ideal image’. I feel somewhere in between as I swing between ‘more ideal’ and ‘less ideal’.” – SMW.

‘Official Ugly Face Folder’ (2013) — from 12. April 2020 (WeTransfer notes): “It’s a mixed bag, but could be kept together in the archive and labelled as such (‘Ugly Face Folder’). It’s all subjective, what seems ugly when one looks at oneself. This was an attempt at ‘control’ almost by calling the images ugly I could somehow ameliorate the ‘ugliness’ I felt looking at them.” – SMW.

Photographs in collaboration with Johanna Braun. Location: Johanna Braun’s apartment, Vienna, Austria, first district. Photographer: Unknown.
From 27. April (WeTransfer notes): “The other 11 images are from 2009 as well. They were taken in Vienna and are a performance with artist Johanna Braun where I am both art historian and nude, and Johanna and I perform together discussing her work. This was based on a 1969 work by Carolee Schneemann in London called ‘Naked Action Lecture’ where she was art historian of her own work in a slide show and got naked at a certain point to see if she could keep her authority.” – SMW.

“In the series, you are often holding a cigarette. In one of the photographs, you also urinate into the vegetation. Does smoking/urinating in nature mean something concrete in this piece?” – AC. “This also goes back to Hannah Wilke. Who peed in a photo in the 70s which she made into a conceptual art work with text from a male writer. A very complex gesture, which she was so good at. Urinating and smoking are both natural acts, so it had to do with just being natural and human and animal in nature. Cigarettes, when I did smoke, felt very artificial although smoking is such a pleasureable activity. I used to smoke about a pack a day for 10 years.” – SMW.

Documentation of SMW’s earliest mature works, which were digitized on occasion of the If I Can’t Dance Kick-off Introductory event and used in SMW’s ‘Up To And Including His Limits’ lecture performance (October 2019). *Note: images can be printed or made into photo-objects upon request.
“These are indeed my earliest works that I have documents of. I had some even earlier works that are with my parents in Topeka, Kansas. A lot of this digitized work is there too. It’s mainly from the period at Pratt Institute, also when Carolee Schneemann was my teacher. It was a super hard period, but out of it came this for me diamond like work. Some of these bleed into time at the Rietveld Academie and De Ateliers in the very first four months I was there and into 1995. I still count these works as being very foundational to what I do and who I am. When I sell from this period the work is more expensive than work I am making now.” – SMW.
