These were started in 2009 after a period of about four years of not painting with acrylics or oils etc. Certainly not on such a scale. I see them as exercise and meditation and I started in 2009 by deciding I would confront depression by painting every negative feeling I could very large, physical related to abstract expressionism and Carolee’s extensions of it off the canvas.

The drips are important and the markmaking which I always felt was substandard but I had to do it anyway. They relate a bit to Tracey Emin and her exorcism of the last painting she ever made. There is an accompanying video on Vimeo called ‘Demystifying Painting’ from 2010. I started painting after having the show in Munich at Lothringer 13 Halle where I filled the whole space with everything I had ever made, to get an overview, and then dumping everything else in the center of the floor in the space (everything that would not fit on the walls). Elke Krystufek saw this show, it was curated by her best friend Uli Aigner, and she (Elke) said she couldn’t sleep because of it. She cut contact with me shortly after that. – SMW.

Performance in conjunction with the exhibition, ‘Without You I’m Nothing (Blue)’: on occasion of the Rijks Open Studios. From handout accompanying the exhibition: in the space opposite ‘Without You I’m Nothing (Blue)’, visitors can also join Murray-Wassink, Hoetger and Rumping for Backstage with the Gift Science Archive. During selected hours, Backstage offers a look into the studio-depot where Gift Science Archive has unfolded. And, if you’re interested in learning more about the collaborative archiving process, Murray-Wassink, Calderón, Hoetger and Rumping will be in a live-streamed conversation on their process, their roles, and the nuances of co-creation along intergenerational feminist axes. The discussion will be moderated by If I Can’t Dance archive and research curator Anik Fournier and held within the Rijks Open Studios events program on Monday 21 June, 12.00-13.30hr.

Date: 05.12.19. Location: Studio Sands, Swammerdamstraat 4E, Amsterdam. Megan Hoetger and Radna Rumping visit the studio of Sands, with Sands. This is the first meeting they have together. Snapshots of the studio as it is, with a painting 'Listen to yourself' on the wall, and shelves that are full with stacks of paper, drawings and cardboard boxes. Images of the perfume collection. Reflection of MH, RR and SMW in the mirror.
“When describing his studio, Sands’ would often say: ‘I painted myself into a corner’. Literally. This image shows one of the very few corners left in the studio with space to paint.” – RR.

Rijksakademie Internal Open Studios – 07.09.20. “Artists over 70 with storages all over the world. Their children are worried, they don’t even know what’s in there. This is really a problem with artists’ families normal.” – Anon. “We [artists] have no saying, it’s up to them. Now I have a core group of people that will take care of them [my art pieces].” – SMW.

“I can’t pronounce ‘femininity’ with a straight face. Woman made for woman? the wonder to the man, the rib to the cage, the noxious to the vindicate. Pray to the goddess.” – AC.

SMW & AC inventorying session – 08.10.20. “Maybe it doesn’t take 20 years to understand the work, as Pina Montano says, but even to face the work.” – SMW. “I’m making an executive decision that the archive will have inconsistencies.” – SMW. “How do you look at work that you made 20 years ago and don’t like or feel comfortable with? – AC. “Or relate to […] I don’t see the point in destroying things. They had a function.” – SMW. “It took me 10 years to make, my whole teenage years (‘I’m Proud of Myself’ sculpture), and I didn’t know I was making it. I was living. The accumulation is something I appreciate.” – SMW.
