Rolled painting

These were started in 2009 after a period of about four years of not painting with acrylics or oils etc. Certainly not on such a scale. I see them as exercise and meditation and I started in 2009 by deciding I would confront depression by painting every negative feeling I could very large, physical related to abstract expressionism and Carolee’s extensions of it off the canvas. The drips are important and the markmaking which I always felt was substandard but I had to do it anyway. They relate a bit to Tracey Emin and her exorcism of the last painting she ever made. There is an accompanying video on Vimeo called ‘Demystifying Painting’ from 2010. I started painting after having the show in Munich at Lothringer 13 Halle where I filled the whole space with everything I had ever made, to get an overview, and then dumping everything else in the center of the floor in the space (everything that would not fit on the walls). Elke Krystufek saw this show, it was curated by her best friend Uli Aigner, and she (Elke) said she couldn’t sleep because of it. She cut contact with me shortly after that. – SMW.
