In the opening process event of Murray-Wassink’s year-long guest residency at the Rijksakademie, the artist and collaborators (Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger, Radna Rumping) took stock of the artist’s oeuvre with guest Vivian van Saaze (Associate Professor of Conservation and Museum Studies at Maastricht University). Conversation focused on the tensions between productive and reproductive value in art objects, and the status of the art object in ‘the archive’. Friday 6 March 2020, 18.30-20.30hr, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Sarphatistraat 470, 1018 GW Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

  • Reflection Notes

“You can’t make work for a total public, because every viewer has a different approach. This is the kind of knowledge I’m mostly interested in, subjective and personal. My worst nightmare is when artists try to control their reception.” – SMW. “This makes me think of Adrian Piper who seems to do that a lot, and Megan mentions that indeed every work relating to her archive should be approved be her. Sands thinks there are two sides of the same coin when it comes to rigour, but that they might make a different-conscious- choice: to control reception or not at all, and ‘every artists makes their choice about how far they want to go and where is their limit’. From the meta-archive process diary, March 30, 2020. In the collaboration between Sands and Amalia, Amalia could have her own associations with the work, and write texts in the database as she pleased, Sands would not edit her. The conversations and weekly archiving sessions in the studio formed a relationship of trust.” – RR.

  • Reflection Notes

“The setting, how many cookies did we need? We had talked often throughout 2020, but the presence of a recorder made this a different kind of talk. I believe that the presence of a camera is for many people more ‘intruding’, and an audio recorder you forget after a while because it is less visible. But from the way Sands was speaking-precise, and making sure what to explain and what to reveal and what not-I knew the recording stayed on his mind.” – RR.

Note written by SMW as an addendum to an invitation extended by If I Can’t Dance and the Rijksakademie in Fall 2020 for an event focusing on artist and their archiving – the event was inspired by the Archiving Tips sent by Piper to SMW in 2012. The invitation was declined by Piper’s assistant. It remains unclear if Piper ever saw the invitation.

  • Reflection Notes

“When I think of Adrian I also think of her dancing (she’s dancing a lot in her works over the years) – something she has in common with Sands I think, dancing to music in various videos.” – RR.
