  • Reflection Notes

“Zoom in on the window, author unknown. To reach the studio at the manage without a key, I walk through the building in a certain way. Memories of walks of years before, hearing my own footsteps, memories of having the key, memories of other artists that occupied this building and the aura and traces that they left behind.” – RR.

In the opening process event of Murray-Wassink’s year-long guest residency at the Rijksakademie, the artist and collaborators (Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger, Radna Rumping) took stock of the artist’s oeuvre with guest Vivian van Saaze (Associate Professor of Conservation and Museum Studies at Maastricht University). Conversation focused on the tensions between productive and reproductive value in art objects, and the status of the art object in ‘the archive’. Friday 6 March 2020, 18.30-20.30hr, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Sarphatistraat 470, 1018 GW Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

  • Reflection Notes

“Roger and Sands talked about the auction of Paul Thek drawings, and then Sands gifted Roger a drawing of himself (Tyranny of time) that reminded him of Paul Thek somehow. And then? Then we just started to install a big cloud of horse drawings, which was a lot of fun. Just see the pictures.” From the meta-archive process diary. – RR.

  • Reflection Notes

“The impulse to make a self-portrait right after the recording. The image as a record. Thinking of Sands his performalist self-portraits (see one of his Identity Shots on the wall). Thinking of Adrian Piper’s ‘Food for the Spirit’ mirror self-portraits. Since I am often in the role of the observer and recorder (the interviewer, but not the interviewee), I’m usually not present in the process images. The self-portrait as a way to share the person on ‘the other side’ of the microphone.” – RR.

  • Reflection Notes

“This became a new ritual, holding a painting or drawing together. This is one of the ‘working 2000s’ that has been archived and moved to mistral in an archive box. Sands has one of these pictures with each of the GSA collaborators. Image taken after a recorded conversation between SMW and AC, about their collaboration, feminism, looking back at the past months.” – RR.

  • Reflection Notes

“The start of the horse cloud. You have to start somewhere. It looks like there is no ‘system’ or ‘strategy’ for hanging this work, but in a way there is: it is a relational one, we figure the structure out by doing.” – RR.
