“This first studio at the Rijksakademie, the ‘smaller’ studio, was more office-like, but Sands immediately made it cozy somehow. In this studio I feel there was more attention to the ‘smaller’ parts of the studio inventory as well, such as slides and note books.” – RR.

“We met in Sands’ house, tea, Duman walking around. We looked at the images of Sands and Carolee framed in the pyramid shape frame with hand-carved tulips. What if we would work on a timeline for Carolee? The archive has a practical function (to make space) but also a social/mental/affective function. In the studio we indeed noticed there was not much space to move.” – RR. “Sands has an inventory of his perfume collection, the last inventory was made in 2011. There are over 500 bottles. Monument to Depression is a work. It’s also a perfume collection. And the perfumes could be viewed as a kind of medicine; they are not only collected, Sands wears them as well.” – RR.
