“I am water but maybe I feel most like the water molecules that exist as precipitation in the skies and make up clouds.” – SMW.

“As per your words – are you a flower or a pumpkin? Both, none?” – AC. “In those photos there is also a little stream. Clarice Lispector has that wonderful title, ‘The Stream of Life’/‘Agua Viva’. I feel most like a stream, very sketchy borders which are dependent on the area around where I find myself, with things determining the bottom of the stream, obstacles etc. and the water itself. I guess I am water. And like the sky, and thoughts are like clouds in the sky, floating along.” – SMW.

“… urinating is cleaner and easier, and it seemed a way to give back to the soil and the earth. Smoking in those images maybe even felt like a city gesture, and I was aware that I was a metropolitan person in a natural setting – it was all very intuitive and accidental as most of my work is…” – SMW.

  • Reflection Notes

“I am in relation to flora and fauna but I feel much more fragile and undefined and actually insignificant, that’s why I love perfume, it has no visual or physical form. I feel like a combination of thoughts and memories, like Carolee Schneemann on an acid trip in the 60s that she wrote a text about called ‘Hormones Circling’ (1966?), reproduced I think in the artist book Parts Of A Body House Book. In the end I wanted to melt into nature, become part of it… dissolve…” – SMW.

“Rural scents can turn you into Cinderella or // sink your carriage in the dirt. // S-h-e smokes industrial cigarettes. // Humans turned to pumpkins. // Take the other path, they said. We are not all made to be pretty little red riding hoods with plenty of food to appease the masters. // We are all not that organic.” – AC.

“A flower is a gorgeous thing, remarkable, precious. Fragile. I was born on St. Patrick’s Day, 17th March, so maybe a clover flower would be appropriate, nothing too precious or rare, something common and hearty.” – SMW.

  • Reflection Notes

“Instead of facing nature, following the classic Friedrich-ian tradition, you face the camera intently. Why?” – AC. “An interesting question. I suppose it has to do with the face and the significance of the front of the body as opposed to the back. The eyes, the mouth, the nose... especially the eyes… I have always found my face and head rather problematic or inconsistent in the way they look. But it seemed a natural decision to face the camera, because the face is the most expressive part of the body and provides interest, for better or for worse.” – SMW.
