Presentation for the If I Can’t Dance Edition VIII – Ritual and Display Introductory Kick-Off Weekend. The artist’s textile paintings adorn the space throughout the weekend. Here, he shares on his multimedia practice, concentrating on its early beginnings in 1993, in a slide show that makes clear his reliance on feminist figures like Carolee Schneeman, Hannah Wilke and Adrian Piper. He then dances before a dual projection – Schneemann video and footage from his studio – in and out of step with ‘Starlight’ by The Supermen Lovers.

  • Reflection Notes

“On a very personal note, while moving bags from one studio to the other, this day something small happened that later turned out to be magical. I will keep it to myself, but am now happy to see a picture of that day.” – RR.

Snapshots of the studio as it is, with a painting 'Listen to yourself' on the wall, and shelves that are full with stacks of paper, drawings and cardboard boxes. Images of the perfume collection. Reflection of MH, RR and SMW in the mirror.

  • Reflection Notes

“We met in Sands’ house, tea, Duman walking around. We looked at the images of Sands and Carolee framed in the pyramid shape frame with hand-carved tulips. What if we would work on a timeline for Carolee? The archive has a practical function (to make space) but also a social/mental/affective function. In the studio we indeed noticed there was not much space to move.” – RR. From the meta-archive process diary. “These images are called ‘first meeting’, because it was the first time MH, RR and SMW met together, to start the GSA collaboration.” – RR.

“When describing his studio, Sands’ would often say: ‘I painted myself into a corner’. Literally. This image shows one of the very few corners left in the studio with space to paint.” – RR.
