"Thought works are this and that and this and that too, but definitely not that and this."
Like in the horse paintings/drawings and textile paintings, the content is a reflective/provocative/questioning statement. Short pieces written or painted in a quick manner. – MH and AC.

These were started in 1995 and 1996 and 1997, around that time, when Sands felt he was gaining a voice as an artist and could make such declarative statements. But there are also funny ones like ‘I Think I Control The Weather’. Humorous. Humor is extremely important, even in retrospect, as depressive thoughts are often funny after the fact (to Sands and his husband Robin). The thought drawings are made on business stationery of Sands’ and made mostly with scented colored markers that Sands used to use as a child to draw. They fade in sunlight. The works are often/mostly A4 and are in cheap frames from the Dutch shop HEMA. There are about 50 in frames, but there are more loose pages floating around... – SMW.

SMW & AC inventorying session – 08.10.20. “Maybe it doesn’t take 20 years to understand the work, as Pina Montano says, but even to face the work.” – SMW. “I’m making an executive decision that the archive will have inconsistencies.” – SMW. “How do you look at work that you made 20 years ago and don’t like or feel comfortable with? – AC. “Or relate to […] I don’t see the point in destroying things. They had a function.” – SMW. “It took me 10 years to make, my whole teenage years (‘I’m Proud of Myself’ sculpture), and I didn’t know I was making it. I was living. The accumulation is something I appreciate.” – SMW.

Meant as gift for Suzanne who lives in London.
Email exchange – 21.05.20. “I want to stress that gift giving is a big part of what I do. I sometimes think I want to be paid to give things away. We should offer visitors/press people etc. free ‘I am a horse’ buttons and bring over some of my ‘Profeminist WHITE FLOWERS’ books, maybe even to give as gifts and to sell. Deborah you must have one of these as well, I will do a horse signature for you! Also, as Radna said, “emotions, feelings, thoughts, relationships and behavior” are my real materials for art. I don’t like to think of myself as a visual artist because the things that mean the most and are the most determinant in my life are invisible, like perfume.” – SMW.
