SMW solo exhibition at mistral, Amsterdam (2021). The exhibition opens up the process of the ‘monumental’ 18-month collaborative performance Gift Science Archive (GSA) to the public for haptic engagements with the artist’s working and archiving processes. Visitors are invited to peruse the GSA archive database and to pull materials from the collection for a closer look and, over a cup, for a story. The ‘research experience’ is thus set into relational motion, by conversations – a central part of Murray-Wassink’s practice. Co-curated by Megan Hoetger (If I Can’t Dance) together with Radna Rumping and Huib Haye van der Werf (mistral).

“The studio at the Rijksakademie that started out empty, was getting rather full by now. Martha Jager had been working on the transcripts of the conversations that RR had recorded with SMW. It was a labour of love, as with most of the Gift Science Archive work not easy to ‘quantify’ into regular working hours (and a regular hourly rate). Sands gifted Martha a textile painting, out of appreciation for her work and dedication.” – RR.

Video registration of the third and final of the process event series, which took place as a live-stream conversation within the public program of Rijksakademie Open Studios 2021. The artist and collaborators Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger and Radna Rumping sat together with If I Can’t Dance archive and research curator Anik Fournier to discuss the structures of ‘collaboration’ within the group’s ‘monumental’ 18-month performance of archiving, as well as their respective roles and shared tasks throughout the process.
