Horse drawings

Made with paint, but usually understood by SMW as drawings. The words “drawing” and “painting” often used interchangeably. A bit of a “liminal space”.

The horses are very intuitive — usually five-minute pieces. Often, they depict the same horse face in a range of situations: from hanging itself to firing a cannon; in solitude or accompanied by other horses and/or a statement. The statements are intended as motivational reflections (RR), questions or expressions of perceived truths. Started when Sands turned 40 as a form of therapy and as a method for feeling happy. Typically, these are monochromatic or bi-chromatic, in black or blue. The body is also included, of the horse, and flowers, stars, hearts, rainbows, rivers, cacti and mountains and clouds and sky and birds flying and sometimes butterflies. If Sands feels anything is unclear, then he just paints what it is and puts an arrow pointing to the unclear thing. This is an unlimited series, painted with brushes in paint water, which is never cleaned or refreshed, only topped up. So, the color is from dirty paint water mixed with whatever color Sands feels appropriate spontaneously. Sands’ favorite paper is 80-gram white A4 (European or otherwise) printer paper. The cheaper and the more wrinkled when painted the better. Must keep that “trashy” quality, throw-away disposable etc. There are hundreds of these on various papers, also on pages from 1980s gay liberation magazine, the French “Gai Pied”. – SMW

“This is the first meeting with AC, MH, SMW and RR working together in the studio. Back then we had no idea it would be the last for a long time. From mid-march 2020, the lockdown because of Covid-19 restricted further collaborative meetings at the Rijksakademie.” – RR.

Rijksakademie Internal Open Studios – 07.09.20. “… bring roughness and playfulness into this serious art discourse.” – N/A. “Funny that you say the word playful, because when you read the (horse cloud) sentences, they are quite heavy, and it makes you draw from your own experiences […].” – SMW. “When I draw them (horses), I feel better.” – SMW. “So it’s like magic!” – N/A.

“There is a gap in this diary but that doesn’t mean things didn’t happen. On March 6th the first process event took place, in a crowded studio, sitting with a beautiful sprawling horse cloud as the backdrop for a flowing conversation (with interesting questions from the audience), I remember how the temperature was literally rising. The video documentation + recording + notes that Amalia took can capture the event. It was also one of the last public events before the corona virus arrived seriously in The Netherlands, and evolved into a worldwide pandemic over the past few weeks, which brings us in a very different situation by now: we can’t meet in person, Sands didn’t go to the Rijksakademie anymore, Amalia moved back to her family in Spain for now, and also Megan works from home instead of the IICD office. How should we continue with this process-that for a large part is dependent on actual people, bodies, meeting in space to collaborate, have rose tea together, touch, measure and discuss the materials of Sands’ his studio.” From the meta-archive process diary. – RR.

Rijksakademie Internal Open Studios – 07.09.20. “The symbology of horses versus the real horses: some visitors would account feeling threatened, or being a horse whisperer, even their height came into play (the initial idea that popped into their minds would be a pony, or something small and nice).” – AC. “The horses are an anthropomorphic stand-in for humanity.” – SMW. “Are they though? Why do they stand for humans, and where do the horses inside the horse skin go?” – AC.

In the opening process event of Murray-Wassink’s year-long guest residency at the Rijksakademie, the artist and collaborators (Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger, Radna Rumping) took stock of the artist’s oeuvre with guest Vivian van Saaze (Associate Professor of Conservation and Museum Studies at Maastricht University). Conversation focused on the tensions between productive and reproductive value in art objects, and the status of the art object in ‘the archive’. Friday 6 March 2020, 18.30-20.30hr, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Sarphatistraat 470, 1018 GW Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
