Horse drawings

Made with paint, but usually understood by SMW as drawings. The words “drawing” and “painting” often used interchangeably. A bit of a “liminal space”.

The horses are very intuitive — usually five-minute pieces. Often, they depict the same horse face in a range of situations: from hanging itself to firing a cannon; in solitude or accompanied by other horses and/or a statement. The statements are intended as motivational reflections (RR), questions or expressions of perceived truths. Started when Sands turned 40 as a form of therapy and as a method for feeling happy. Typically, these are monochromatic or bi-chromatic, in black or blue. The body is also included, of the horse, and flowers, stars, hearts, rainbows, rivers, cacti and mountains and clouds and sky and birds flying and sometimes butterflies. If Sands feels anything is unclear, then he just paints what it is and puts an arrow pointing to the unclear thing. This is an unlimited series, painted with brushes in paint water, which is never cleaned or refreshed, only topped up. So, the color is from dirty paint water mixed with whatever color Sands feels appropriate spontaneously. Sands’ favorite paper is 80-gram white A4 (European or otherwise) printer paper. The cheaper and the more wrinkled when painted the better. Must keep that “trashy” quality, throw-away disposable etc. There are hundreds of these on various papers, also on pages from 1980s gay liberation magazine, the French “Gai Pied”. – SMW

  • Reflection Notes

“The start of the horse cloud. You have to start somewhere. It looks like there is no ‘system’ or ‘strategy’ for hanging this work, but in a way there is: it is a relational one, we figure the structure out by doing.” – RR.
