“I printed this stationary to use for my business, but never really used it for that. I used it to start making drawings on. My Mom had sent me fruit scented markers with animals printed on them, which I had used in my childhood. I used these to make the drawings, declarative statements to find my way.” – SMW.

In the opening process event of Murray-Wassink’s year-long guest residency at the Rijksakademie, the artist and collaborators (Amalia Calderón, Megan Hoetger, Radna Rumping) took stock of the artist’s oeuvre with guest Vivian van Saaze (Associate Professor of Conservation and Museum Studies at Maastricht University). Conversation focused on the tensions between productive and reproductive value in art objects, and the status of the art object in ‘the archive’. Friday 6 March 2020, 18.30-20.30hr, Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Sarphatistraat 470, 1018 GW Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
SMW & AC inventorying session – 08.10.20. “Part of the reason I’m not more confident is because I don’t have money. If I knew anything in this room had economic value… Tracy Emin has a waiting list. Imagine.” – SMW. “I think I would hate them [the buyers].” – AC.

“About solitude. very fragile. Tracy Emin scrawled figures… in a way. She’d probably be appalled by the comparison.” – SMW paraphrased by MH.

Date: 28.01.20. Location: Rijksakademie, studio manege. Images of SMW and MH unpacking, measuring, photographing and ordering rolled-up painting works. Images of the large print of e-mail from Adrian Piper with archiving tips on the wall.
“By just picking a few of the paintings randomly from the stack of rolls we immediately discover different strands of Sands’ work and history; such as a rough painting that Sands send to Tracy Emin, that she returned by mail, in 2009: ‘It’s a rough painting to test if Tracy could deal with it, and obviously she couldn’t. It looks like it has been kicked and smashed. I have given Tracy so much of my loyalty-maybe too much?’.” From the meta-archive process diary. – RR.
