Tryout Masculinity Shots
Done together with Danish artist Peter Brandt who is also heavily influenced by feminist art, especially Hannah Wilke’s work. They were photographed in one sequence of about 2 hours by Robin very casually and unplanned. We are shaking penises instead of hands etc. I call this sketching when artists are (body artists) in the same photo frame.

I did not enjoy these as much as doing similar things with Elke Krystufek and VALIE EXPORT. The male body is too familiar and somehow I did not feel that Peter had made a strong enough case for himself as a body artist and this eventually broke our friendship among other things. Peter is born in 1966 and so nearly 10 years older than me, but the actual investment in certain forms of body art and feminist art came late to him. I am younger but was actually earlier in my explorations which I find significant (see especially ‘Identity Shots or Before Robin, After Hannah Wilke from 1995’ in this digital archive). I find these images significant for what they lay bare, that the male body is generally less interesting for multiple reasons. More on this in other ways at later dates…Just to say maybe the main reason is the male body and patriarchy, it’s too “close” to the enemy, although Peter has a very photogenic penis.
