These are ‘thought drawings’ early philosophical and factual exploratory statements – my first forays into language as text. Using markers my mother had sent me from Topeka, that have fruit flavors, licorice for black, etc.
More
The markers had animals drawn on them or printed on them which I think kids who grew up when I did in that area of the country would recognize. The stationery was printed for business use (my art business) but almost all of them became these drawings. Some are portraits and some in the series are without letterhead but related because of the form and use of text. I see them as precursors to all other language use. They were also made at about the same time as the many binders I have with handwritten longer texts. Very Tracey Emin inspired but my very own with my very own twists. I love them in their simplicity. They are affirmative and positive because I was staving off depression which really hit hard later on in my late 20s (around 2003). Holding my head above water, hopeful, strident, declarative etc. etc... Also early precursors to horse drawings and all other uses of text in my work. Foundational. – SMW.
