Gai Pied drawings

Around 2014 Dutch curator Erik Hagoort had given me several large boxes of gay liberation magazines from the 1980s from Holland and France. The pages were yellowing and brittle, especially of the ‘Gai Pied Hebdo’ magazines from France. I did not know what I would do with these and they remained in boxes in my studio for a year or so. Then one day I decided I could use the yellowing paper to my advantage and I started painting them with black acrylic paint in groups, about 10-15 at a time (when I had the space in my studio, which at that time was still very doable as it is a bit more in 2021 again). I accumulated hundreds of these small A4 paintings in a fairly short amount of time. Stream of consciousness works, usually related to each other, very often in pairs (like “yes, no” “positive, negative” etc. etc.). I think the resulting works are beautiful and they remind me of Paul Thek because of his paintings on newspaper, mine are like simplified text versions, text as figuration instead of his figuration. They are liberationist and funny and clever (even if I do say so myself) at the same time. – SMW.
